Summertime is here, which means it is pool season, cookout season, vacation season and you can’t forget it is also the hottest season! Heat can not only be dangerous for everyone, but especially to seniors. Here are some great tips to that will help you get the most out of your Summer!
- Stay hydrated
It is important for seniors to stay hydrated during the hot summer months! Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration because as their bodies age it loses its ability conserve water. It is very important to drink plenty of sweat replacement drinks such as Gatorade or PowerAde to replace water and electrolytes that may have been lost while you were sweating.
2. Keep cool
It may be beautiful and sunny outside but it is very important to keep yourself cool. There are some great, cool alternatives to staying out of the heat and getting out of the house, such as going to the public library, movie theatre, shopping malls, or anywhere indoors where the temperature is cool and welcoming! Excessive summer heat can be very dangerous for seniors, that is why it is important to check with your doctor to be sure the higher temperatures will not affect any medications you are on.
3. Dress appropriately
Be sure to always dress for the weather. Lighter colors and natural fabrics like cotton are great ideas to stock your closet with for the summer months. If you are going back and forth from inside to outside, wearing layers is a good idea to help you adjust from the outdoor heat to cooler temperatures indoors.
4. Stay safe outdoors
When you are planning to go outside be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun and don’t forget to wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays! It is always a good idea to wear a hat to help keep yourself cool and if you live in an area with lots of mosquitoes be sure to apply mosquito repellent to protect yourself from any diseases that mosquitos can carry.
5. Exercise smart
It is important to stay active and exercise but during the hot summer months be sure to exercise smart. If you must go outside and exercise, be sure to dress appropriately and bring plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. It is also a good idea to join a local gym or YMCA and walk/workout indoors in the cool temperatures, plus it’s a great way to make new friends! If you must exercise outside be sure to keep track of the time and consider exercising earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not at its peak.
6. Keep in touch
When you are thinking of going outside for an extended period of time, it is important that you let someone know you will be outside so they can periodically check on you. Be sure to let them know when you do come back inside! Communication is key to staying safe during the summer!
7. Know the signs of Hyperthermia
During the hot summer months be very cautious of abnormally high body temperatures known as Hyperthermia. Heat stroke is an advanced stage of hyperthermia and can be life-threatening. Be sure to remember these warning signs of hyperthermia, and seek medical attention immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms! •
- Body temperature over 104 degrees
- Sudden change in behavior, such as confusion or agitation
- Dry, flushed skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Heavy breathing
- Rapid pulse
- Not sweating at all, even if it is hot out
